DISTANCES TO GALACTIC HIGH-VELOCITY CLOUDS. I. COHEN STREAM, COMPLEX GCP, CLOUD g1
The highand intermediate-velocity interstellar clouds (HVCs/IVCs) are tracers of energetic processes in and around the Milky Way. Clouds with near-solar metallicity about 1 kpc above the disk trace the circulation of material between disk and halo (the Galactic fountain). TheMagellanic Stream consists of gas tidally extracted from the SMC, tracing the dark matter potential of the Milky Way. Sev...
متن کاملAn Accurate Distance to High - Velocity Cloud Complex C
We report an accurate distance of d = 10 ± 2.5 kpc to the high-velocity cloud Complex C. Using high signal-to-noise Keck/HIRES spectra of two horizontal-branch stars, we have detected Ca II K absorption lines from the cloud. Significant non-detections towards a further 3 stars yield robust lower distance limits.
متن کاملFuse Spectroscopy of High Velocity Cloud Complex C
We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of the sightline toward the Seyfert 1 galaxy Markarian 876, which passes through high velocity cloud (HVC) complex C. This sight line demonstrates the ability of FUSE to measure ionic absorption lines in Galactic HVCs. High velocity absorption is clearly seen in both members of the O VI doublet. This is the first detection of...
متن کاملStellar Velocity Distribution in Galactic Disks
We present numerical studies of the properties of the stellar velocity distribution in galactic disks which have developed a saturated, two-armed spiral structure. In previous papers we used the Boltzmann moment equations (BME) up to second order for our studies of the velocity structure in self-gravitating stellar disks. A key assumption of our BME approach is the zero-heat flux approximation,...
متن کاملGalactic Dynamos and Galactic Winds
Spiral galaxies host dynamically important magnetic fields which can affect gas flows in the disks and halos. Total magnetic fields in spiral galaxies are strongest (up to 30 μG) in the spiral arms where they are mostly turbulent or tangled. Polarized synchrotron emission shows that the resolved regular fields are generally strongest in the interarm regions (up to 15 μG). Faraday rotation measu...
